Choose an offline Taiwanese mahjong app

Meet the offline table, choose teaching hints, and understand practice versus ranked play.

Which mahjong app fits the game you want?

Start with the rules and the kind of table. A tile-matching puzzle, a live multiplayer service, and an offline Taiwanese practice app solve different problems. Search for the game you want to learn, then check device support and release availability.

Your goalWhat to check
Taiwanese practice on iPhone or iPadMahjong’s current implementation uses a four-player offline table, fixed LRC rules, and optional teaching hints. The app is coming soon.
Live opponents and several rulesetsMahjong Time advertises live tables, bots, tournaments, and several variants including Taiwanese. Check its current platform and membership requirements.
A solitaire tile-matching puzzleChoose an app that explicitly describes solitaire or pair matching. Mahjong’s Taiwanese table uses drawing, discarding, and claims instead.
Rules used by friends or a local clubAsk which rules and scoring version they use. Taiwanese, Riichi, American, and other variants should not be treated as interchangeable.

For example, if you want to practise before joining a Taiwanese family table, compare its scoring with our LRC scoring examples. An offline win does not establish that you know every house rule. If you need live opponents immediately, review an available service rather than waiting for this app’s release.

Learn at a table that waits for you.

Mahjong’s offline mode puts you at a four-player Taiwanese table with computer opponents. The table uses fixed LRC rules, and you can turn on teaching hints for unranked practice. Local play does not require an online opponent.

Mahjong is coming soon for iPhone and iPad running iOS 26 or later. This guide describes the current app implementation; final release availability will be shown on the App Store listing.

The game is the traditional multiplayer tile game. You build sets and a pair; you are not matching pairs of free tiles as in mahjong solitaire.

Start with teaching hints.

  1. Open Play and choose Play Offline. If you already have a session, choose New Offline Game instead.
  2. At Meet your table, turn on Teaching hints to receive explanations while you play.
  3. Choose Start Game. The standard rules stay the same; teaching assistance is the setup choice.
  4. Build towards five sets and a pair. Follow the available draw, discard, and claim actions, and use the in-game rules reference when a call is unfamiliar.

Before your first hand, read tiles, turns, and winning hands, then the 16-tile Taiwanese game.

Practice and ranked play have different purposes.

The teaching-hints choice
SettingHow the game is recorded
Hints onPractice · Unranked. Saved to local history, with no MRS or competitive rewards.
Hints offStandard · Ranked. Results are eligible for MRS; a rating update still needs a qualifying completed result.

The current rating engine needs at least four completed hands for an update. Sixteen hands form one unit of evidence, with a maximum weight of 1.5. A single winning hand does not directly translate into rating points. Read how MRS uses results.

Return to your saved table.

Use Resume when your active table is available. If the app offers Continue a Game or Saved Games, review the saved sessions and choose the one you want.

When you replace a current game, read the confirmation: starting the new game replaces that session’s autosave. Do not treat a local save as a promise of cross-device recovery. Cloudflare synchronization requires a connection and is separate from playing an offline hand.

For a short learning exercise, identify your five possible sets before discarding, then compare the final result with our scoring examples.
